Quarter Cut / Quarter Sawn / Straight Grain
Back to GlossaryQuarter Cut / Quarter Sawn / Straight Grain – Glossary
The crown cut terms describe the appearance of tangential cut grain orientation.
This type of cutting [i.e. quartered] describes radial cut wood and is particularly suited to species and varieties such as English Oak, European Oak, Russian Oak, Beech, Sycamore and Maple that display a very attractive medullar ray on the quarter sawn face. The resultant grain is straight rather than flowery but very attractive and highly prized by many.
