Brushed Floor Boards
Back to GlossaryBrushed & oiled and brushed & lacquered finishes involve the brushing of the solid Oak floor boards or Oak flooring mechanically with a series of usually cylindrical wire brushes. The brushing removes the softer [spring growth] wood more rapidly than the harder grain – thus achieving a textured surface to the wooden floor boards. The depth of this texture depends on
- the stiffness of the bristles
- the length of the bristles
- the rotary speed of the brush
- the feed speed of the flooring through the brushing machine
- the pressure applied to the floorboard by the driving head of the brushing machine
- the grain and hardness of the wood
- the number of passes through the machine or the number of brush heads applied
After then being brushed or blown clean and free of dust the flooring is then oiled or lacquered in the usual way.
