The term oak parquet flooring simply refers to a mosaic arrangement or pattern of solid oak blocks. It is a traditional method of floor covering dating back to the 17th century. Usually laid over solid screed floors and fully glued down using an appropriate wood floor adhesive. It is, however,  also suited to installation onto plywood [of minimum 22mm thickness] run over joists. The blocks sometimes tongued and grooved but often square edged are glued directly to the sub-floor but not to one another. Once installed, the oak parquet flooring blocks are then sanded flat and finally finished with a number of coats of flooring oil, hard waxoil or lacquer.

Solid oak parquet flooring, available from our York warehouse, provides a considerable advantage in terms of installation time. The individual blocks are loosely held together with a thin web or mesh backing. The blocks can thus be laid rapidly in sets of 15 to 72 individual blocks at a time. These lay directly onto the notch trowel applied flooring adhesive.

Oak parquet blocks provide a particularly practical wood floor option in that damaged blocks can be easily repaired or replaced. Loose blocks can relatively easily be re-set. Used parquet blocks are indeed often reclaimed and sold in reclamation yards. These can be cleaned and re-laid, albeit at the expense of many hours of labour and exertion. New blocks particularly those meshed in sets offer a far more cost effective solution in terms of installation sums.

By virtue of their small size, individual oak parquet blocks offer an environmentally friendly oak flooring solution, in that the resultant high cutting yield means that a higher proportion of each oak log harvested is used and not wasted. Provided that the logs are sourced from well managed forests, clients and specifiers can be confident that, from an ecological point of view, solid parquet block flooring is a natural choice. Reclaimed blocks similarly offer a sensible environmentally friendly wood flooring option.
